Greywood Approach

A foundational idea driving the Greywood program arose from recognition of an ever increasing number of effective psychotherapeutic modalities. The elements of these varied psychotherapies heavily overlap but very often with distinct terms, explanations, and instructions, all of which can create confusion when bundled into a more standard, ‘multi-modal’ PHP / IOP. A Greywood pillar is thus to simplify the process.

Starting with fundamental science building blocks has provided a currency for translating between historically separate therapeutic traditions. Our transtheoretical integration has channeled myriad evidence-based therapeutic approaches into an innovative format and distilled a powerful, streamlined program.

Theoretical orientations embraced and refined by the Greywood Approach include CBT-derived schema, dynamic, psychodrama, and narrative. Concepts emphasized in increasingly mainstream modalities such as DBT and ACT also permeate our model. Finally, meditation and mindfulness principles, especially of the Vipassana (insight) tradition, feature prominently amongst the influences on our program.

Pathways

Our center offers an intermediate level of care, which is more comprehensive than the traditional outpatient setting. A key benefit of our model is that our clients can return home each evening. Additionally, all of our programs allow for a continuation of academic progress. Depending on an individual’s needs, one of two program options would be recommended:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Clients enrolled in the PHP spend six hours a day, five days a week, at our center for a maximum of eight weeks. Program hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Daily study time is supervised by a licensed teacher at our center.

  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs are less intense than partial hospitalization, with clients attending three hours a day, five days a week, for approximately three to six weeks. Program hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 12pm, 12:30pm to 3:30pm, or 4:30pm to 7:30pm. Clients enrolled in the IOP are able to maintain at least part-time school attendance.

Treatment Structure

The crux of our care model is structured, intensive group psychotherapy. Beyond the delivery of core content, the group format harnesses the interpersonal nature of the Greywood approach. We also introduce variety into our groups with a mind-body orientation using psychodrama, yoga, meditation, art, and cooking.

Individual and family therapy sessions are an equally integral part of our program. They complement the progress being made in the group setting and serve as an opportunity for reflection, exploration and internalization of content.

Personalized Care

Psychoeducation, elaboration of coping skills, and reinforcement of emotion regulation are standards of PHP / IOP curriculum. The Greywood approach is further enhanced by its transtheoretical and surface-penetrating orientation. These distinctive features fuel the content of our programming and propel the process by which it is delivered.

A virtue of our integrative format is an incisive diagnostic evaluation, revealing each client’s psychological vulnerabilities, emotional wounds, and characteristic strengths. Sophisticated and robust assessment delineates a depth focus and proposes roots of the current predicament, which in turn guide the course of precise treatment. Our interventions are expressly geared towards continually homing in on the client’s specific needs, thus optimizing therapeutic healing in the form of vulnerability shoring, wound repair, and resilience bolstering.

Summer Program

Summer is an excellent time for teens and young adults struggling with behavioral health concerns to recalibrate and prepare for the school year ahead. Our partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs continue to operate from June through August, with added offerings and the exclusion of dedicated academic time that exists during the school year.
